CAMERON Gessner has fired the first shot in the 2013-14 AHG Sprintcar Championship, winning the 25-lap feature race from David Priolo and Trent Pigdon at the Perth Motorplex last Tuesday night Oct 22. The extraordinary Tuesday mid-week meeting was run in place of the rained out Saturday calendar.

The defending champion started from position three but quickly got into the front spot and was never challenged despite a few restarts and plenty of action behind him.

It was a good night for driver of the #41 who won his first heat and was second in the next bout that gave him enough points to start in the Gold Shootout.

He thanked the crowd for coming out to the track on a Tuesday night.

“It’s a bit weird racing on a school night,” Gessner said.

Priolo showed plenty of pace to charge from 11th to third in the first four laps and after being locked in an entertaining duel with Pigdon he put the heat on Gessner in the final run to the flag.

Pigdon started on pole but on one of the restarts was penalised two laps for jumping the start, lamenting a missed opportunity.

Mark Wells, who started on the second row, reclaimed fourth over Jason Kendrick in the last few metres of the race.

Kendrick put in a hell of a drive, starting from 15th after the team was forced to charge a diff and rear end prior to the main event.

The event was the opening round of the AHG Series and was celebrated with a massive fireworks display.
