One of the key lead up events to the running of Warrnambool’s Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic at Premier Speedway is the Fan Appreciation Day. This event is held every year in the rear carpark of the local Flying Horse Bar and Brewery just 5 km from Sungold Stadium (Premier Speedway). This year saw the largest turnout of fans in the history of the event, with thousands of Die-Hards attending to buy Team Merchandise, secure an autograph and simply chat with their Racing Heroes.
The Big Screen was on hand and Commentator Gavin White did a sterling job of interviewing Drivers and assisting with the hundreds of give-aways that included posters, Tee shirts and even Hoosier Racing Tires for lucky drivers.
If today’s attendance is any indication of the crowd to be expected at Night 1 of “The Classic” (tonight 26 Jan) then it would appear we could be in for a “lockout”. Never mind even contemplating what is going to go down for tomorrow night’s final. The Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic is Australia’s equivalent to the Knoxville Nationals and is a prequalifying race for the World Challenge at Knoxville during their Nationals Campaign in early August this year. Warrnambool lives and breathes Sprintcars come the Australia Day long Weekend – the whole community is abuzz with anticipation and gets behind the biggest Sprintcar Event in the country. A mammoth 102 racecars have nominated, including a record 18 American Drivers.
Parking was a premium in and around the fan appreciation day with local business carparks absolutely “chockers” and neighbouring streets lined as far as the eye could see. It was an awesome sight that’s for sure !
Roll on the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic for 2013 !
