Murphy Racecars – An Australian Institution

A few weeks ago Torquetube Media was invited to Murphy Racecars in Perth, Western Australia to witness a personal fit-out session of a custom Sprintcar chassis that was being constructed for 360 racer Mark Miller. (See previous post).

We took the opportunity to also have a chat with business owner Geoff Murphy and gain an insight into the man that has built a reputation on craftsmanship and winning.

Geoff has been making racing chassis’s for an incredible 40 years. Formula 500’s, Quarter Midgets, Speedcars and Sprintcars are the main chassis’s that Geoff has fabricated over those years and people like Keith Mann, Jeff Stanton, Garry Rush, John Fenton, Warrene Ekins, Steve Caunt and Mark Wells are just some of the Drivers that have chosen to race the popular Australian Murphy frames.

Geoff indicated that across the various racing categories, Murphy Racecars have prevailed at an incredible 14 or 15 Australian Titles. Not a bad record when you think about all the overseas competition that is out there.

His initial involvement in Motorsport started with a very influential Tech School teacher who was associated with motor racing at Caversham back in the 60’s. And while his interest in Motorsport blossomed, so did his practical and academic acheivements associated with his Autmotive Apprenticeship.

Geoff went on to be head scrutineer at Wanneroo Park (Now known as Barbagallo Raceway). Eventually he swapped pavement for dirt, and joined the Speedway fraternity, initially building cars for Geoff Stanton and Paul Johnson.

A turning point came for Geoff when the legendary Alf Barbagello sent him to America to work with Bob Trostle and Karl Kinser. Geoff told me he actually worked on the car that Steve Kinser drove to his first Knoxville Nationals way back in 1980.

Geoff was very proud of this photo - It hangs on his office wall and includes some pretty big names in US Sprintcar Racing - see below for enlargement

The photo that Geoff truly treasures - Bob Trostle with wife Dorotha, Butch Barr, Doug Wolfgang, Steve Kinser and Bob's Grandson Mark Wilson. Mark's life was tragically taken in a practice accident at Knoxville Raceway in 2001. Geoff built incredible knowlege working with such people.

Geoff Murphy certainly is a colourful character - just like his office door !

Geoff excelled in his apprenticeship - this is a framed Annual Report from 1965 at Carlisle Tech School, Perth WA. Nothing below 90% achivement ! Good on you Geoff !!!!

Montage of Mark Wells hangs on the Geoff Murphy office wall - "Wellsy" is one of the more prominent proponents of the Murphy Sprintcar and always turns out a ripper racecar !

Geoff's skills as a craftsmen and innovator are unparralleled - here Geoff explains custom design aspects to Mark Miller. Check out the previous post regarding the development of a custom Extreme Tall Boy Chassis to suit 7 foot tall Mark.

Geoff Murphy's Office is full of interesting memorabilia - This framed print is a classic - titled "Anatomy of the Edmunds Coil Over Sprintcar" - a great cut away section to say the least

Outside of Chassis Construction, Geoff’s other love is fishing. It’s tough to find the time to break away from his workshop, but when he can he packs the tackle box and rods and heads out into the Indian Ocean with his 280 HP boat for a bit of deep sea action.

If you are interested in talking to Geoff about a racecar, Murphy Racecars is situated at 4 Hanson Street, Maddington WA. (Mobile: 0408 467 223). Geoff can manufacture a standard chassis for you or if in the case of Mark Miller you need to go highly customised, then Geoff is one of the few people in the world that can design a car around your personal requirements and stature. Murphy Racecars also offers a chassis repair/rejig service.

There is no question that Geoff Murphy is a pure Craftsman and strives for utter perfection. The results speak for themselves. Murphy Racecars is truly an Australian Institution in Speedway.
